Research
Our research activities are divided into four major topics:
Spectroscopy (SpectroLab)
Our mission is to further advance fundamental research in imaging spectrometry and imaging spectroscopy related to environmental analysis on local, regional and global scales. In particular our emphasis is to strengthen spectroscopic data analysis in terms of enhanced calibration, multi-directionality, and (pre-)processing. Application development is supported using these techniques in view of derivation of bio-geophysical and bio-geochemical parameters relevant for environmental analysis.
Spectroradiometric Observing Systems
The Spectroradiometric Observing Systems group at RSL focusses on the calibration, characterisation and operation of spectroradiometric pointing and imaging systems and the subsequent data calibration.
Thermal Infrared Remote Sensing (TIRLab)
The TIR team focuses on thermal infrared remote sensing across scales and spheres. Main areas of research include directionality effects in 3D canopies, heat stress and instrumentation of topographically complex forest sites, improvement of land surface water temperature of alpine lakes, characterisation of surface temperature distribution and land surface energy fluxes over cryospheric landforms and in the Siberian tundra.
Earth Observation Applications and Services
The group on EO Applications and Services focuses on using satellite data for diverse applications such as biodiversity assessment. With having the National Point of Contact for satellite data (NPOC, part of Space Exchange Switzerland) as part of the team, and being active in the operational team of the UZH Space Hub (UZH Innovation Cluster of Space & Aviation), we are interested in any innovative, user driven EO application towards data-driven policy making for Switzerland (NPOC) and on a global scale (e.g., with Google Earth Engine).
