Unlocking Climate Action: Breaking Financial Barriers in Mexican Cities

Stakeholders Unite to Address Climate Funding Gaps in Mexican Municipalities

Workshop about Climate Finance Challenges in Mexican Municipalities

Prof. Hanna Hilbrandt, Dr. Erandi Barroso-Olmedo, and Dr. Fritz-Julius Grafe  recently hosted a stakeholder workshop titled "Challenges of Climate Finance in Mexican Municipalities." Held at Ciudad Universitaria, UNAM on February 20-21, 2025, the event served as the closing event for the research project "The Urbanization of Global Climate Finance."

The workshop brought together a diverse coalition of participants—development professionals, researchers, government officials, international cooperation representatives, and climate activists—to address the financial obstacles facing Mexican cities in their climate action efforts.

Through collaborative methodologies, participants identified key challenges including legal framework misalignments, stakeholder coordination issues, and resource misallocation. They developed innovative solutions ranging from institutional reforms to community-driven initiatives.

The workshop fostered crucial dialogue between academic theory and practical implementation. The resulting roadmap for climate finance reform emphasizes accessible resources, collaborative governance, and legal innovations to ensure climate funding reaches communities most vulnerable to climate impacts.
