Ifigeneia Dimitrakou, along with Thomas Maloutas, Nikolina Myofa, and Dimitris Balampanidis, has co-edited the book 37 Stories of Athenian Apartment Buildings, published by the Onassis Foundation.
“37 Stories of Athenian Apartment Buildings” presents a rich and multidimentional history of the Athenian apartment blocks (polykatoikías) and their profound influence on the city’s socio-spatial structure and social life. Featuring narrations, oral histories, memories, experiences, and an abundance of visual materials reinterprets modern and contemporary urban history through the intertwined stories of people and buildings. It captures the transformations within Athenian society and its evolving urban fabric.
This book is based on extensive empirical data gathered during the research project ISTOPOL: Stories of Athenian Apartment Buildings: The Structure of the Housing Stock and Its Impact on the Social Geography of the City, funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (ELIDEK), the project was conducted by the Department of Geography at Harokopio University between 2020 and 2022.
