People in wheelchairs or with pushchairs are often led to insurmountable obstacles by navigation apps. The city and the University of Zurich want to make the city more accessible.
The ‘ZüriACT: Zurich Accessible City’ project helps people with limited mobility to get around the city more easily. Despite routing services such as Google Maps or digital maps, this has not become any easier today - on the contrary: most of these services ignore obstacles and may suggest routes to users that do not take them to their destination.
Between spring 2023 and 2024, volunteers recorded 9,136 obstacles in District 1 alone, as well as simplifications such as a wide pavement. With the help of this data, routing services will be able to take obstacles into account when planning routes. And the findings from the project should make it easier for the city to plan and build barrier-free routes.

This data will serve as the basis for further research projects, including the follow-up project 'ZuReach'. The aim is to create a scalable and regularly updated database with comprehensive information on the accessibility of footpaths in Zurich - as a citizen science project and in close collaboration with various partners in the field.
