Outreach: RSWS at a local high school
In early April, we took part in a project week at MNG Rämibühl. The high school, which specializes in mathematics and the natural sciences, annually organizes this event during which students explore the topic of climate change. This year, the focus was on the theme of “the city.” A total of ten organizations from Switzerland presented solution-oriented projects addressing climate change in urban areas.
Our colleague Lars Groeneveld and Sophie Emberger from ETH presented our research project UrbaNature. To help the students understand our research, we showed our data in an accessible way. The students were able to discover where heat islands are located in the city of Zurich, and learned how urban vegetation can help to minimize heat stress. We also explained how we collect our data and gave students the opportunity to try out a thermal imaging camera.
