Kathrin Naegeli is a senior scientist leading the TIRLab, embedded within RSL. Her research focuses on mountain climate and the physical processes governing interactions between the atmosphere and heterogeneous land surfaces. She investigates how mountain climate varies and changes across space and time, how climate-driven transformations of mountain environments affect surface-energy exchange and local climate, and what the resulting changes mean for ecosystems and people. A particular focus is on Essential Climate Variables, including snow-covered area, surface albedo and land surface temperature, and on resolving the strong spatial heterogeneity characteristic of mountain environments. Her work combines in situ climatological measurements with spatial Earth observations and long-term climate data records to link local process understanding to landscape and regional scales.
She is president of the Swiss Snow Ice and Permafrost society (SIP), a member of the Swiss Commission of Remote Sensing (SCRS).She is also a co-founder and advisory board member of Girls* on Ice Switzerland and is dedicated to make science accessible to everyone.
