The exhibition highlights the political geographies, working conditions, cultural lives of the people, and minerals beneath the shiny surfaces of the mobile, computer, and cell phone industries worldwide. Through digital and physical constructions, the exhibit created an immersive art space where attendees were invited into the living and working spaces of small-scale gold miners, pickers, traders, and laborers in the Kamituga region (the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Of particular interest were the depictions of female laborers in the small-scale gold mining world in Congo.
Speaking about the experience of taking the exhibition to his native DR Congo, Gabriel expresses:
“I can say that it was amazing to share the results of this research with the people who participated in it. For them it is a huge consideration. They were so happy. We express our Gratitude to Prof Dr Michael Schaepman for facilitating the realisation of this endeavour. This project serves as a remarkable opportunity to establish a connection between local gold producers and end consumers, while also aiming to enhance awareness regarding the working conditions of artisanal miners in the Eastern DRC.”
