About

Michael Niederberger is a software engineer and geographer working in the Remote Sensing of Water Systems (RSWS) group in the Department of Geography at the University of Zurich (UZH). Since 2022, Michael has been working as a scientific programmer and technical engineer for in-situ remote sensing. The Fluo4eco project involves continuous hyperspectral measurements of diverse vegetation covers at various field sites and therefore includes extensive field work with sensors, sensor data streams and management, and the development of custom software solutions to process and analyze the data. Currently, Michael is also contributing to the NextGenCarbon project, which involves expanding existing forest research sites to enable the extraction of vertical optical depth information using GNSS signals.

What excites you most about your work at RSWS?

Exploring the fundamental functions of plants using diverse sensor technologies and signals excites me most about my work at RSWS. Moreover, the collaborative environment with dedicated and passionate researchers makes my work more rewarding and interesting.

Projects

  • Fluo4Eco: Combining Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Mechanistic Modelling for Advanced Assessments of Ecosystem Photosynthesis
  • NextGenCarbon: Next Generation Modelling of Terrestrial Carbon Cycle by assimilation of in-situ campaigns and Earth Observations
