Prof. Dr. Wilfried Haeberli headed the Glaciology, Geomorphodynamics and Geochronology Unit until 2012. His research concentrated on glaciers and permafrost in high mountain areas, in particular in the context of climate change but also as related to natural hazards, slope movements and environmental reconstructions. He was the first director of the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) and the driving force for establishing long-term permafrost monitoring in Switzerland as well as worldwide.
