Remote Sensing of Environmental Changes
Room number: Y25 J 90francesco.ioli@geo.uzh.chWebsite
Profile
I am a postdoctoral researcher in the Remote Sensing of Environmental Changes group at the Department of Geography, University of Zurich. My research focuses on photogrammetry, 3D reconstruction, and image matching, with a particular interest in developing automated workflows for large-scale Digital Elevation Model (DEM) generation using satellite multi-view stereo. My work has applications in glacier mass balance studies and environmental monitoring.
I earned my PhD in Geomatics from Politecnico di Milano, where I explored UAV-based and terrestrial approaches for short-term glacier monitoring. During my doctoral research, I developed ICEpy4D, a Python package for 4D monitoring of alpine glaciers using low-cost stereo cameras, deep learning, and photogrammetry.
I am committed to open science and actively share my research and code on platforms like GitHub, contributing to projects such as Deep-Image-Matching, a toolbox integrating traditional and deep-learning-based feature matching algorithms. Beyond my academic work, I am a UAV pilot with expertise in topography and have a deep passion for outdoor activities, including hiking, climbing, mountaineering, and skiing.
