Biography

I am a Senior Scientist working on Hanna Hillbrandt's Responsible City project and an Honorary Lecturer at the Bartlett School of Planning, UCL (London). Before joining UZH, I was the Margaret Tyler Research Fellow in Human Geography and lecturer at Girton College, the University of Cambridge. Prior to Cambridge I was a Research Fellow on Mike Raco's What is Governed in Cities, a comparison of housing system governance across Paris, Amsterdam and London. I have a PhD in Geography from UCL (London, UK), where I was fortunate to be supervised and inspired by Jenny Robinson. During my PhD I was a visiting scholar at the University of Witwatersand in Johannesburg. I have an MSc and Sociology from LSE and a BA in Land Economy from the University of Cambridge.

Research

I am an urban, economic and financial geographer with an interest in housing and comparative urbanism. My research is broadly split into 3 areas:
  1. The politics of expertise, including the role of private sector actors in urban development and governance
  2. Comparative urbanism and thinking with elsewhere: raising the question of 'why is it different here'?
  3. The role of different forms of knowledge, particularly financial logics and expertise

My research has been published in a range of journals, from Economic Geography to Progress in Planning. My 2020 paper on real estate developers published in EPA won the Association of European Planning School's 2021 Best Published Paper award, and my paper on urban risk management was shortlisted for Urban Studies' Best Paper in 2022. My research has also been covered in popular media, including The Guardian's Rockefeller Cities column and the Observer. You can find me talking about my book London on this podcast.

Teaching

I love teaching. At UZH, I teach on the Geography GEO232 paper.

I have been lucky enough to teach students from BA to PhD at UCL and The University of Cambridge. My work on using research as a teaching tool has been published as part of the UCL R=T book series.

I continue to supervise Masters students at the Bartlett School of Planning, UCL.

Beyond academia

Outaid of academia, I am the Policy Lead for Menstrual Rights Global, a global advocacy organisation that pushes for menstruation-related policy change at a country and international level. Between 2022 and 2024 I was a strategy consultant for Dalberg Global Development Advisors, based in their Geneva office. During my time I worked on projects for UN and other IOs. I was the Deputy Practice Area Manager for Cities and Urban Development; a Global Lead for GLAD (the LGBTQIA+ organisation) and a member of the diversity and inclusion committee.
